The ped. said it was "just a phase" and he would outgrow it. At that time I was concerned he would hurt his head because he would throw himself on the floor and hit his head, it didn't seem to bother him, as if he had a high tolerance for pain. Now his behavior has gotten worse. He has had the testing for behavior through the Early Intervention Program, they seem to believe that it is "just typical 2 yo behavior" I strongly feel differently. I have called one of those parent hotlines because I'm at wits end, they seem to believe that what I have explained about my son is that he does have ODD, I don't know how to deal and cope anymore?? I’m an Integration Aide, and I often find myself working with children with O.D.D.. I’m currently doing some research on O.D.D and have found your site to be very informative.

However, I’m looking for some positives. For instance, I’ve personally observed children with O.D.D. seem to be bright, intelligent kids. I had 1 had my second oldest diagnosed back in the 70's with being hyperactive (what they now call adhd). He was given what they called a low dose of Ritalin. I was told it'd take about 1 mo. to "kick in". Well, when it did, he was changed alright, almost into a zombie. No more outbursts or difficulties. This last for maybe 2 mo. I took him off and found an alt. method using a change in his diet. No added sugars, no soda, no red or yellow food coloring and no preservative in foods. Big change! Tough but was what worked for him. I could see the difference every time he had eaten a no no. So I tried to keep close to the same type of diet for the others. A couple of my other kids displayed some of the same things but not to his degree. I also had another husband by then who cared and helped. But now I have several grandchildren that display this O.D.D. They have not been formerly diagnosed. They are young (6,5,&5). The paernt who was once on the ritalin now has his own boy (6y.o.) on it. They think it's good. His mom is a nurse as so am I now. But she won't listen to me. Now 1 of my twins boy (5 yo) has been having problems. His mom is taking him to MD and is being examined for possible adhd and that man suggested that she look into ODD. She then told me about it and now I'm looking into it. And from the sounds of things I think this child diffenently would be diagnosed with it. And I will be sharing my new information with my other children. I have a granddaughter who I think for sure would come under this. I know they will be glad to learn of behavior modification vs. drugs! Thanks so much for taking the time to get this information out to others and help them to know they are not alone and there is good non drug help available. My little man is nearly 6yo and life is very difficult with him most of the time. He is such a lovely, loving little boy but has been diagnosed with ODD. Needless to say - he will be an only child! I never understood how people enjoyed parenthood so much, and I felt so out of the "I love parenthood" loop (and still do), so it was a relief to know that there was an actual problem, not my "poor" self-proclaimed parenting skills.
